Photographing Your Pet

Hints and tips that may help you take the best pictures of your pets.

Lighting

1 The best lighting is achieved outside in natural
light.

2 Avoid direct sunlight, as this can alter natural
colouring. A bright but overcast day is perfect.

3 Try and avoid using a flash as this can cause red
eye and distort the true colouring and shading of
your pet. The exception to this is if your pet is
black or very dark in colour. A flash can actually
bring out shading and texture which maybe lost
in photos taken under other lighting conditions.

Positioning the Subject

1 Take the photos on their level using a chair or table, but best of all, sit on the ground so the camera lense is at eye level with your pet. Decide whether you would like a front or side profile of the subject. Take at least two facial photos as close as your camera focus will allow.

2 I don't require reference of all the body as I usually illustrate head and shoulders of the subject only. This approach is far better for capturing the true personality of your pet.
